The premier archery club near Horsham in West Sussex

Shipley Bowmen is an all inclusive Archery club based near Horsham in West Sussex.

Our members take part in many archery disciplines and we offer courses to introduce beginners to our sport.  During the Winter, we shoot indoors at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre on Sundays and from Easter to late September, we shoot outdoors at Knepp Castle on Sundays and Wednesday evenings.  Anyone is welcome to come along to one of our Try Archery Sessions, and then decide whether or not to become Members.

We deliberately keep our subscriptions low to attract new people who want to learn archery, as well as members of other Clubs, and people renewing an old interest in the sport. The only restriction we place on membership is a lower age limit of 8 and children aged 8 to 14 must have a responsible adult accompanying them.

Archery is one of the few sports that is completely open to virtually everyone on equal terms.

Summer BBQ

The Club has been in existence now for some five years and has until this year arranged an annual evening meal by way of a late Christmas Dinner (usually in February)! Shooting at Knepp

Now that the summer outdoor season has started at Knepp it is time to make every member, who wants to shoot, aware that every piece of equipment has to be brought from the Club’s shed onto the field and erected; and packed away at the end of the session. read more…

Arrow Fletchings by Brian Clarke

Fletchings, or Vanes are fixed to arrows so that they are guided to fly straight. They are similar to the tail of a bird. In fact, some traditional archers still use birds’ feathers but they are now mostly made from some sort of plastic. Unfortunately, one of the penalties of improving your grouping is that some fletchings get shot off. Or, even if you are not that good, someone else will do it for you if several people are shooting at the same target. Whatever the reason, there comes a time when fletchings need to be replaced. read more…

Arundown Worcester Competition – 5 Feb 2017

I am very pleased to report that seven Shipley Bowmen competed in this event. I believe this is the most we have fielded and it reflects how some members are progressing from, just shooting as a pass time, to keeping records of their scores and improving their skills. read more…

Pre Loved Equipment

During the last few months I have noted that a lot of our members have changed or up-graded their equipment. During that same period we have had new people join the club who have, in most cases, enthusiastically purchased bows, arrows and all the other bits and pieces that they think are necessary. Nothing wrong in that, or is there? read more…
